Obituary of Dorothy B. Sassaman

Dorothy B. Sassaman “Dot” of Belvidere, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2026 at the age of 94 years. She was born on September 5, 1931, the daughter of the late Fred A. and Vietta (Cathers) Vannatta, in Roxburg, New Jersey. 

She married Frank Sassaman Sr. in 1953, and together they shared 50 wonderful years. She worked and retired from Belvidere School District as a Secretary after 25 years.   She was a volunteer with United Presbyterian Church as a Treasurer and Elder, JCC Warren County, Meals at Home, Fire Auxiliary, and the Cancer Society.

Dorothy enjoyed spending time with her family, crocheting, gardening, reading, pictures and crossword puzzles. She was known for her love of family, lasting friendships, and generosity. 

She is survived by her children: Frank Sassaman Jr and wife Jennifer, Susan (Sassaman) Matula and the late Michael Matula, Garry Sassaman and wife Mindy, her 9 Grandchildren, 18  Great Grandchildren, 1 Great-Great Grandchild with one on the way and their families and her sisters: Barbara (Vannatta) Duimstra and Ruth (Vannatta) Kent.

She was predeceased by her loving husband Frank L. Sassaman Sr., son David Sassaman, her sisters: Edith Lewis and Betty Jane Spittle, brother Fred Vannatta Jr.

Visitation will be held at United Presbyterian Church on May 12, 2026, from 10am-11am, followed by a funeral service at the church and graveside services at Belvidere Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dorothy's memory to United Presbyterian Church Church of Belvidere, 224 Mansfiled Street, Belvidere, NJ.
