Obituary of Gregory Madison Carlen

Gregory (Greg) Madison Carlen, 76, of Belvidere, NJ passed away peacefully at home on July 23, 2026.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick R.C. Church, 327 Greenwich Street, Belvidere, NJ 07823 on Thursday, August 13,2026 at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at St. Patrick Cemetery, Pequest Road, Belvidere, NJ. 

Greg was born on March 27, 1950, and raised in Kearny, NJ by his parents, Carl and Rita Carlen. He graduated from Kearny High School in 1968 and then joined the US Navy in 1969, serving our country for 4 years until 1973. After an honorable discharge, he worked for NJ Bell Atlantic/Verizon for 30 years. After retirement, Greg worked part-time for the Kearny Police Department as a school crossing guard.

Greg was active in the Kearny community; he coached the minor baseball and the pee-wee football teams, was treasurer of Kearny Youth Football for many years and active in the Kearny High School booster clubs. He always enjoyed seeing his players around town and yelling ‘Hey Coach’.

Greg and his wife, Patti, moved to Brookfield adult community in 2013, remaining active in social events, including playing bocce and continuing his traveling adventures after ‘seeing the world’ as a Navy Sailor.

Greg is survived by his wife, Patricia (Patti) of 49 years; his sons, Timothy (Sonia), and Scott (Jennifer); his pride and joy grandchildren, Bryce, Claire and Zachary; his brother Ross (Laurie), sisters Shelly Halley (Tom), and Donna Francis (Warren); brother-in-law, Gary Hulse; many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Rita and his sister, Nancy Hulse.  

Memorial donations may be made in Greg’s memory to Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice.
