Edward Joseph was born at home on a snowy evening in January of 1939 to his parents Edward and Mary. He was their only child and greatest blessing. He graduated Morris Hills HS after a stellar four years of track, football and academics. He turned down multiple scholarships in favor of serving our country. He proudly enlisted with the US Army. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned home and met Alberta Thomas while working at General Drafting Co. The rest was history. They married and started a family of their own, settling in Lake Rogerene, Mt. Arlington and then Mountain Lake, Belvidere where they have resided for nearly 60 years. Ed was a proud member with IBEW Local 581 until his retirement. With Alberta’s unwavering support, they made a good life for their family and always had a home filled with love and laughter.

A selfless man, Ed joined the Mt. Arlington FD and the Mountain Lake Fire Company. He moved up the ranks through the years. He served as Chief and was a recipient of the Lewis Buckenmeyer Sr. Award. He was a Mason and a Tall Cedar and served as Grand Tall Cedar. Ed embodied the spirit of service and truly would help any neighbor or stranger in need.

He enjoyed snowmobiling in the winter, golf in the summer and fishing any day! Above everything he loved being with his family. He was the adored Grandpa to his grandchildren and never missed a school, sport or life event. Ed was always there. He was over the moon to welcome his great grandson into this world just a few weeks back and we are certain he will continue to watch over his family with love and pride.

On a snowy evening in January, Edward Joseph passed away surrounded by his family. Along with countless joyful memories, he leaves behind a legacy of commitment to his loved ones and community. May his memory be a source of comfort and inspiration for generations to come.

He leaves his wife Alberta “Bert” (nee Thomas) of 63 years; his sons Edward “Butch” and his wife Janet and William “Bill” and his wife Pam; his grandchildren Casey Butcher (Austin) and Troy Gallagher; great grandson William James Butcher; sister-in-law Erla Ambrose; and many more dear friends, neighbors and fellow firemen.
