Condolences
My Father and Mother (David and Janet Garrahan) were teachers with Bruce at Belvidere HS in 1962. The story of Bruce taking them both on their first airplane ride from a snowy field in Hope, NJ is documented in my Father's autobiography.
Bruce dragged a one-seat plane with a jump seat out of a barn with a rope. Mom sat on Dad's lap, while Bruce cranked the propellor by hand to start it. He then had to quickly had to jump in before the plane got away. Apparently he did some stunts that scared my parents, but neither came away with a fear of flying or anything.
Thanks Bruce!
My appologies for this being so late after his passing, but I only found out through looking for another obituary. My introduction with Mr. Couillard came at Belvidere High School in 1967, his last year there. I only took shop to avoid a study hall, but was I glad I did. To a freshman, he seemed so old (he wasn't), and wise (certainly was), and he made working with your hands and mind such an interesting experience, looked forward to on a daily basis. I last saw him at a McDonald's where he had ridden his motorcycle to. He still remembered me even though it had been decades since he was my teacher. What a smart, talented, free spirited man he was, and I offer my condolences to his family.
My deepest condolences to Bruce's family...Bruce was an inspiring teacher and mentor, especially during my formative years at Wilson High School. Bruce taught us the fundamentals of aviation, and also took us on numerous field trips to aviation museums. He also taught me and other students how to fly, taking time out from his family to teach us flying on many weekends...memories that I still cherish to this day.
I had a chance to visit him several years ago, and he was still the same - regaling us with his many motorcycle and flight trips all across the US. His passion for aviation and adventure was infectious, and really helped me in shaping my future into where I am today.
He will truly be missed...
I already miss you a lot, Bruce. I take comfort, though, in knowing that the best you had to offer to me stays with me always, in my mind and in my heart.
If I'm chosen to go through the Pearly Gates and get wings, I'm looking for you for my checkout.
My deepest sympathy to the family. Mr. Coulliard was a unique and independent individual. I remember him from Belvidere High although I did not take shop. He was well known and well liked at school. I'm sure many of his former students are thinking of him today. He was a special person. Rest In Peace Mr. Coulliard.
In my high school years I worked at camp hope. Many happy memories I have taken through my life from that experience. The work seemed so easy because we were all surrounded by the warmth and steady guiding hand of Bruce and his family. thanks for those prescious memories. I know the good lORD is with you and will comfort you ; now and always God bless
and thanks for the memories.
