Horace A. Smith, 84, of Harmony Township, NJ, passed away suddenly on Thursday December 15, 2005, in Easton Hospital, Wilson Borough, PA. He was employed by Ingersoll-Rand Company, Phillipsburg, NJ as a supervisor and machinist, before retiring in 1983. Born on August 31, 1921 in Lake Ariel, PA, he was the son of the late Jacob P. and Clara Tucker Smith. Mr. Smith graduated from Pocono Mountain High School. He joined the Merchant Marines in 1941. As he served during WWII, he survived the sinking of his ship, the Alfred Moore, by a German U-boat in the Mediterranean Sea. He was a communicant of St. Patrick R.C. Church, Belvidere, NJ. He was a member of the Harmony Township Volunteer Fire Company for over 48 years and served as foreman. He was a member of the Pocono Region Antique Car Club and served as Vice President. He was also a member of the Harmony, Belvidere and Phillipsburg Senior Citizens Clubs. He was an avid bowler and a member of the senior league at the Warren Lanes. Mr. Smith was an outdoorsman, enjoying golfing and hunting. Mr. Smith was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, the former Beatrice A. Merritt and a daughter, Denise C. Ghetti, who both died in 2001. Surviving are two sons; William H. of Raubsville, PA and Douglas J. of White Township, NJ; two daughters, Mary-Claire Lightcap of Wilson Borough, PA and Melody A. Jongeman of Bangor, PA; a brother, Donald of McMichaels, PA; four sisters, Emma Weaver and Delores Bennett both of Nazareth, PA, Gloria Graeber of Henryville, PA and Betty Evans of Tannersville, PA; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces.
