Obituary of Leland E. Cooper

Leland E. Cooper, 82, of Sherman, CT, formerly of Bethel, CT and Harmony Township, NJ, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 26, 2006 at the River Glen Health Care Center, Southbury, CT. Born in Phillipsburg, NJ on April 14, 1924, he was the son of the late Walter and Jenny Lanterman Cooper. Mr. Cooper had lived in Harmony Township, NJ before moving to Bethel, CT in 1971. Leland graduated from Phillipsburg High School in 1942 and enlisted in the Army Air Force Reserves, studying Fundamentals of Radio at Lehigh University. His trainings around the country in radar ended with his assignment to the 22nd Bombardment Group, known as the Red Raiders, in New Guinea and the Philippines, as a radar operator and mechanic. He served with the Army of Occupation in Japan for four months at the end of the war and was honorably discharged at Fort Dix on February 12, 1946. Lee attended Churchman Business School in Easton, PA and was an American Can (Dixie Cup) employee in the Credit Department for 35 years. He was a former Cub Scout leader and Little League coach in Harmony, NJ. He had enjoyed fishing in Canada, Alaska and the Artic Circle. Mr. Cooper was predeceased by his wife, Styntje DeBoer Cooper, who died December 31, 1997. Surviving are a son, Ronald L. Cooper of Sherman, CT; two daughters, Catherine A. Balduino of Washington, NJ and Linda E. Cooper of Middlebury, CT; a brother, Dr. Kenneth Cooper of Williamsport, PA; five grandchildren, Bradley and Sarah Cooper of Sherman, CT, Joseph Balduino of Williamsport, PA, and Elizabeth and Melissa Balduino both of Washington, NJ.
