Obituary of Edwin C. Belby

Edwin C. Belby, 88, of Belvidere, NJ, passed away peacefully at his home with his loving family at his side on Tuesday, August 18, 2009. Born on December 5, 1920 in Bayonne, NJ, he was the son of the late Patrick and Delia (O'Donnell) Belby. Mr. Belby retired from NJ Bell Telephone Company in 1983 after 36 years of service. Mr. Belby had worked very hard and unlike most men he never hesitated to stop for directions using it as an opportunity to tell someone that he met his wife in the first grade and that his father was a police officer in Bayonne. He and his wife the former Madeline Haines had recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. Proud of his Irish heritage and a devote Catholic, Mr. Belby was a parishioner of St. Patrick R.C. Church, Belvidere, NJ; a member of the Knights of Columbus; the Holy Name Society and the Telecom Pioneers. He had also served in the Navy during WWII. Surviving, in addition to his wife Madeline, are a son, Michael and his wife Kathy; daughters, Patricia, Lorraine and Nancy; 12 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren. Mr. Belby was predeceased by three brothers, three sisters, and two grandchildren. Edwin will be particularly remembered for his storytelling, his rice pudding and his sense of humor.
