Obituary of Augustine S. Herbert

Augustine S. "Gus" Herbert, 73, a lifelong resident of Belvidere, NJ passed away at his home on Friday, May 28, 2010. Born on November 26, 1936 in Belvidere, he was the son of the late Augustus B. and Cathryn Keyser Herbert. Gus and his wife Theresa Hayes Herbert have been married for 46 years. Gus was a 1954 graduate of Belvidere High School. He served as Deputy Warden of the Warren County Jail and then worked for 33 years as a Lieutenant of Security at Hoffman La-Roche. He was co-founder of the Belvidere Boosters Club, served on the board of the Belvidere Youth Athletic Association, and coached baseball for several years for the B.Y.A.A. Gus played and loved sports and was an avid follower of local youth, high school and college sports teams. In particular, Gus cheered on the Martins Creek Creekers of the Blue Mountain League. Gus was very proud that all three of his children graduated from the University of Notre Dame with honors. Gus was a parishioner of St. Patrick R.C. Church, Belvidere, NJ. He was also a member and supporter of New Jersey Right to Life and the Maroon Club supporting Lafayette College athletics. Surviving in addition to his wife Theresa are two sons, Augustus and his wife Valerie, Kevin and his wife Cindy; a daughter, Colleen Smith and her husband Brett; eight grandchildren, Augustine, Catherine, Michael, Brian, Joseph, Elizabeth, and Erin Herbert and Madeline Smith.
