On behalf of my mother, please accept our deepest condolences on the passing of your father, Chief Smar. He was a very special kind of person -- a smart and street-savvy cop while at the same time a devoted husband and father. I will always remember him for his dry wit and humor. My dad, Theodore Polhamus, served as Chief of the Rahway Police Department while your dad served as Chief of the Clark Police Department. The two attended Rutgers University together and were good friends both on and off the job. I'm sure they have resumed their friendship on the other side of life.

Dad, thank you for all the times you were there for me growing up and in my adulthood. I will miss your smile, your dry sense of humor and your appreciation of so many things in life. I will love you forever.

Grandpop, I treasure all the advice you shared with me and I will remember and share all of the astounding stories you had. I miss you so much already. Thank you for being me a wonderful role model for how to treat family and how to remain strong in faith. You were valiant on the battlefield and in the hospital rooms with Grandmom. You never failed to make others laugh and you were always so welcoming. I love you so much!

We love you Dad. There are so many memories that I will hold close to my heart.
