Obituary of Leroy John Redmond

Leroy John Redmond of Belvidere, NJ passed away peacefully with family at his side on Friday Sept 2, 2016. He was 94.
Born to Walter and Ellen (McGreevy) Redmond in Newark, NJ, he was predeceased by his brothers Walter and Thomas and his sister Veronica. He grew up in Newark and graduated from St. Michael's High School.
His remarkable life included WWII service in the Army's 14th Armored Division with two years of combat duty in the European Theatre. As a tank commander under the leadership of General George S. Patton, he participated in the liberation of the Stalag 7A POW camp in Moosburg, Germany in April of 1945 that rescued over 100,000 Allied prisoners. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He had a long career as a purchasing agent in Westinghouse in Newark, where he was also a respected union leader.
An ardent boxing and football fan, he was a special supporter of Notre Dame and the NY Giants. Proud of his Irish heritage, Roy was a world traveler with an abiding interest in history, the arts, and issues of social justice. He is survived by his loving wife and fellow globetrotter of 67 years, Dorothy (nee Burns); by his four children: Cynthia Byram (Stephen), Gail Lyons (James), Roy Redmond (Judith), and Maureen George (Mitchell Paul); and by his seven grandchildren: Colin, Conor, Brendan, Cáit, Liam, Seán and Kieran, all of whom made him proud.
His final resting place will be in his beloved Waikiki in Hawaii. Details on memorial services at St. Patrick's RC Church in Belvidere will be posted on www.macfaddenfh.com . Please view service information.
