Condolences
Something I remember fondly about Grandpa is how proud he was to be a Werlau. I was only 12 at the time, but I still remember his excitement over the thousand year anniversary of the town of Werlau in Germany in 1992. 1000 Jahre… did he not have a hat, and t-shirt and several other things to commemorate the fact? Six years later, in 1998, during my gap year backpacker explorations of Europe, I made my own pilgrimage to the town of Werlau. I remember climbing a hill behind a beautiful castle on the banks of the Rhine river to make it up to the town. It really was a stunning setting! Grandpa had reason to be proud of it! And, here's the thing… despite unsuccessfully trying to convince my biological father as a kid that I should also bear the name, I am technically not a Werlau. But, Grandpa has always been Grandpa and he never made me feel anything but his grandson. I was welcomed from the start. For that, I am very grateful. Thanks, Grandpa. I imagine your heaven looking like somewhere on Rhine. May you rest in peace.
George was a gentle man, a great husband, father, and friend. He will be missed by all who knew him. My prayers and love for all the family.
I am deeply saddened by the passing of your father and my dear brother George. Starting in early childhood I have fond recollections of George. I admired him as my big brother the soldier. I remember him as a loving husband and proud father. I recall meeting his wife Kay and each new niece and nephew for the first time as his family grew and witnessed the love and affection he had for his family. I have warm memories of the times he and his family would visit during the summer and holidays. I cherish the phone conversations and correspondence we had in recent years to catch up on events in our lives during years of separation and to reminisce. I will miss him very much. My thoughts and prayers are with you Donna, Glenn, and Alan during this most difficult time.
Uncle Dennis
My heart may be full of sadness at this time with the loss of Uncle George. But my heart will always be full of fond memories of summers spent in NJ with Aunt Kay and Uncle George. They made me feel special and treated me just like one of the kids. From Aunt Kay teaching me to first curl my hair and eat cinnamon toast to Uncle George sitting on the floor with me building loc-n-logs and erector sets. My love goes out to Donna, Alan and Glenn.
My thoughts and prayers are with you at this trying time. I remember spending my summers in Patterson with my cousin George and his new wife Kay. Going to picnics at Kearfott Lake. Spending time at Kay's family home with her Mom and sisters. They took me on my first subway ride to the Bronx Zoo at age 13. On the way home they got on subway first and I didn't know if put my hand in door it would open. Off they went and there I stood!! I spoke to ticket agent and they let me crawl under turnstile. They said to get off at next stop and they would probably be waiting there. They were!!! George was a gentle man, husband and father. He will be missed.
Just want to say some words about George(farter) as I called him. I met him and his wife Kay about 58 yrs. ago when I started baby sitting George and Kay's daughter, Donna. Then came the 2 boys, Glenn and Alan. They were such a wonderful loving family that I got very close to them as the years went by. Later in years they took me in to live because of my problems and I just got so attached to them. They treated me like family.George was a very hard working man and always supported his family the best he could. I can't say enough about the kind, loving, gentle, caring man he was and always ready to help you. George will be sadly missed, always enjoyed talking to George(farter) on the phone whenever I could. Love always, Pat Gilbert (poof).
Never got to meet my Uncle George. I am so sorry to hear of this loss.
We send our sympathy and sorry we cannot make the trip. David and I are sending our prayers.
Uncle George will always be part of our lives. Especially during the holidays his absence will add to the conversations in many good ways. My prayers and love to all you at this time. Cousin David.
