Condolences
Aunt Jane (and Uncle Bill) will always have a special place in
my heart. As a kid and spending many
summers in Nutley, I remember the family get together/dinners we shared after
church every Sunday afternoon. I don’t
recall ever missing a Sunday together. It
was the only thing that made sense to me at a time when nothing made
sense. The bond between Jane and her
sister Lillian, our grandmother, was undeniable and will continue far into the
future. The first daughter of “every”
family member on the Banks side starting with Lillian and Henry is named Jane or
has Jane/Jayne in their name. The most
recent being Liza Jane born a few months ago. I know Jane and Bill are together as are Jane
and Lillian. On behalf of the Banks/Boning/Touchstone
families, our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Grandma had a wonderful laugh and an endearing spirit. I will always remember her stories of yesteryear fondly, and the time I was able to spend with her. Some of my fondest memories with Grandma involved spending time with her and the family at the shore on hot summer days. Grandma always had a vivid memory she could relate to any present situation, giving perspective on how different her youth was to ours. I see so much of her good in my family, and we were truly blessed to have had Grandma in our lives. She is undoubtedly in a better place, and is likely walking with Grandpa at this moment. We love you, and we'll miss you, Grandma. Thank you for touching our lives.
so blessed to have enjoyed 33 years with such a remarkable woman i called grandma. she is with me forever in beautiful, life changing memories and i am so grateful for this.
i remember as a kid asking her permission to wear her nude colored pumps all around the house when she would come visit. when i would visit her and grandpa in nutley, the first thing i wanted to do was climb their backyard tree with the formation of branches that made a perfect seat.
many lunches and suppers together on her porch where her stories would unfold. i loved listening to them, for they were 95 cumulative years of pure treasure. from a road trip to niagra falls in the 1920s to dipping her feet in the cold alaskan waters to just how her daily walk was on the loop.
i appreciated that no supper was complete without a little dessert...and her chocolate sauce she would make in that little yellow genie pot was scrumptious every time.
i was always impressed by her landscaping skills, how she could lay peat moss like nobody's business and that she truly perfected how to make boxwoods look like green meatballs.
"sweetest grandma" indeed with an admirable and adventurous spirit that i looked up to and so adored. i miss her so much, but i am so happy at the same time because i know she is in a amazing place.
I have many special memories of Grandma that will stay with me forever. As a kid, I loved to go to her house! I will miss her very much. Its a comfort to know that she is with Grandpa in heaven now and she is at peace.
I have so many special memories of Grandma, memories that have sharpened in clarity as we both got older. I remember with fondness how she permissively let us freeze orange juice in Dixie
cups in the North Spring Garden refrigerator, Dixie cups which inevitably spilled before they froze, coating the freezer in a sticky mess. I remember Grandma covering my ears during the Nutley fireworks, a perfect end to a picnic in the Mease’s backyard. I remember summer after summer making trips to Island Beach State Park, jamming as many people as possible into one car and having Grandma remove the tattered “State Parks” senior pass from her wallet, issued in 1987 and still in use over three decades later. We teased her about her bathing cap when she still was sturdy enough to enter the water. We waved to her from the shoreline when she was no longer swimming, instead sitting contently under the umbrella, waving back to us. I remember walking with her along the boardwalk in Seaside Heights, teasing
her about the gaudy t-shirts and enjoying an ice cream cone together. I loved hearing her stories about Girl Scout camp, about delivering babies during the night shift when the doctors would let her, about taking the train out West to visit Grandpa during radio school, about walking around the Nutley block and sharing a Hershey bar with Grandpa after dinner. Perhaps my most cherished memories will be of watching Grandma play with my daughter, an enthusiastic GG who never let her 93, 94, or 95 years slow her down, matching my toddler’s energy beat for beat.
I miss that I will never again hear her voice on the telephone or receive a card in her perfect cursive. I miss that I’ll never share a meal with her over the lace tablecloth on her dining room table, a cup of hot tea to accompany any dish. I’ll miss her stories and her opinions. She was much loved and her memory will be cherished forever.
To Nancy and family, so sorry to hear about your mom. I have so many wonderful memories at "the Breen's house". I loved your Dad's Saturday pancakes. We were all so blessed to have such great neighbors. My thoughts and love are with you.
To Nancy and family, We are sad to hear of your mom's passing. She was a kind mom and had a long life well lived in such a lovely town. Love to all. Donna and Gordon
Jane was an inspiration to so many of us here in The Glen - walking 3 time a day no matter what the weather! We were able to talk to her so many time. She was a fine lady and will be missed by so many.
Dear Breen family,
Having you all for neighbors for many years was one of the better parts of our lives. It was so sad to hear of Jane's passing.
Fondly,
Mary Van Schoick
"Mrs. V"
Dear Kathy, Nancy, David and families,
I was so saddened to learn of your mom's passing yesterday. Nola called to tell me the news. I am up from Virginia for Easter, and all the "V's" we're together at Mom's. All of us shared wonderful memories of your mom and childhood on North Spring Garden. Of course, Billy's kids got to enjoy the whole Spring Garden School experience too (Livi will be a freshmen and Jack, a senior, next year at NHS).
We were all so lucky to have each other. Our parents parented all of us. I can still name every family on the block.
Please give me a call 757-810-1235 to catch up. I'd love to hear from you. Love and hugs to all. May your mom rest in peace...she was loved and will be remembered by many.
Love,
Jan
They say it takes a neighborhood to raise a child. Ours surely was that kind of neighborhood. There was such a wonderful relationship between our two families. I know some of who Jane was is also a part of me. Sharon and I are both saddened by her loss, but very thankful that she was part of our lives.
Peace to all of you.
My condolences on the passing of Mrs Breen. Growing up on North Spring Garden Ave in Nutley, up the street from Jane and Bill and children, Ray, Kathy,Nancy and David (although David was much younger than \"us\")Jane was a one of the NSG Ave moms, and probably the first nurse I new as a child! I remember Jane always was dressed in pearls and a dress every day! I played in her house with Kathy and Nancy often (\"dress up\")and to this day, have photos of Kathy and Nancy and I. She was a lovely lady, and I recently asked Mrs \"V\" (Mary Van Schoick) if she had heard from Jane. My condolences to Kathy and Hans,Nancy and Arnie, David and Susan, and families. Kathy and Nancy I am still in New Jersey (Central)and would love to hear from you in the future. In Condolences, Nola
